Belfast Maine Residents Express Concerns Prior to Zoning Meeting on Indoor Salmon Project

Residents of Belfast Maine will have a chance to weigh in on a zoning hearing to be held on Nordic Aquafarms request to build a large indoor RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) for salmon.
The meeting will take place Thursday, March 15th.
Nordic Aquafarms plans to invest between $150 million and $500 million in the new facility where salmon would be raised from eggs to eight-pound fish for sale to markets in the Northeast United States.
The 40 acre site is owned by the city Water district and a private land owner. As part of the sale, Nordic wants a zoning change that would expand the adjacent City Owned Industrial park to encompass at least a portion of their new site.
Although Belfast has lost other industries, some residents are philosophically opposed to land based aquaculture..
