Clearwater to Challenge Legality of Surf Clam Decision, Says it Undermines $156 Million Investment

Clearwater Seafoods of Halifax says it will be pursuing legal options after its monopoly on Arctic surf clams came to an end Wednesday when a new licence for the species was issued to Five Nations Clam Co. of Elsipogtog, N.B. Clearwater called the licence award a “failure in public policy and abuse of power by the minister.”
Christine Penney, Clearwater vice-president of sustainability and public affairs, said in an interview Thursday that the company is not taking legal action because the licence was awarded to Five Nations Clam Co. — made up of First Nations from all four Atlantic provinces and Quebec — or that its non-Indigenous partner, Premium Seafoods Ltd. of Arichat, Richmond County, will harvest, process ....
