Pacific Fisheries Technology Conference Hears Shortage of Workers will Plague Alaska Industry

Glen Bledsoe of Washington State University told the Pacific Fisheries Technologists meeting in Girdwood, Alaska, that the industry’s increasing reliance on an unstable workforce has to be addressed through more automation.
“We don’t have the workers… we lack a stable workforce,” Bledsoe told conference participants during the first morning of the February 5–7 conference. Many young people in the United States and other countries are choosing less strenuous and safer livelihoods not limited to the seafood industry, he said.
