Oregon Delay in Dungeness Crabbing has Wide Economic Impact, More Frozen Crab

The delay until January 15th of the Oregon dungeness crab season is having wide ranging economic impacts. Also it will lead to a higher proportion of crab being frozen, something that adds to the cost, say processors.
The season has been delayed due to the requirement that crab have at least 25% meat fill, and test fisheries in Oregon this year have shown the filling in of crab has been taking longer than usual.
“People look forward to having crab on New Year’s and Christmas, and we missed all of that … without crab by the first of the year what will happen is there will be a lot of crab coming in here in two weeks and we’ll have to buy it with the thought in mind that it has to go in the freezer,” Hallmark Fisheries Plant Manager Scott Adams told the Coos Bay World.
