Study Finds that Salmon Deaths After Spawning Aid Offspring

A new study published in Ecology Letters has found that spawning salmon aid their offspring by dying after migrating home.
Researchers at the University of Glasgow’s Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine conducted an experimental study of salmon streams in northern Scotland. Ten streams containing the same number of salmon eggs were studied. Five of the streams “received the normal level of nutrients” that came from a decaying salmon carcass.
