Maine Approves First Lantern Net Scallop Farm in Penobscot Bay

A pair of Maine Lobstermen have obtained an experimental lease for a scallop farm from the Maine Dept. of Marine Resources. They are part of the growing interest in aquaculture scallops in Maine using wild spat.
The father and son fishermen, Marsden and Bob Brewer, looked at the lantern net scallop fishery in Japan a year ago, and now are testing it in Maine waters. The Brewers can grow up to 200,000 Atlantic sea scallops using lantern nets, where mesh nets, each 10 floors deep, hang from a 600-foot longline.
