MSC Responds to Criticisms of PNA MSC Tuna Using Vessels That Target both FAD and Free Swimming Fish

The Marine Stewardship Council is responding to the criticisms the On the Hook Campaign has made about PNA Tuna .(SeafoodNews October 16th)
When the PNA purse seine tuna fishery was first certified more than five years ago, it was the first purse seine tuna certification by the MSC. The certification was only for free swimming tuna, but vessels were allowed to target both free swimming schools and FAD tuna in the same trip, so long as the catches were segregated.
In an widely distributed opinion piece, also published in Seafood News on October 16th, Dr. Megan Bailey laid out the criticism, which was that it was misleading to tell consumers that their tuna was sustainable if the same vessel that caught their MSC tuna also caught tuna that the MSC would not certify...
