In the wake of several straight years of closures, fishermen join forces with scientists to survey stocks and assess the future.
The relationship between state and federal regulators and those in the fisheries they regulate has never been exactly kisses and cuddles. But with Maine's shrimp fishery coming off several straight years of closures, fishermen like Portland-based Dana Hammond are making an effort to work closely with federal regulators to get the fishery back open as soon as possible. In June, Hammond volunteered three days of his time and boarded the Gloria Michelle, the NOAA fisheries research vessel that conducts the annual surveys of shrimp populations in the Gulf of Maine.
