Russia Vows Crackdown on 10,000 tons of IUU Snow Crab Fished in Barents Sea

The Russian government plans to tighten a fight over illegal crab catch in the Barents sea, according to recent staments of Natalya Timakova, head of press-service of Russia’s Prime-Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
Timakova said that currently illegal crab catch in the Russian Barents sea is estimated at 2 billion rubles (US$30 million) annually. However, according to some unofficial figures, it could be significantly higher.
This has been confirmed by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), according to which the number of ships, catching crab in Barents sea under the flags of Lithuania, Latvia, Spain, Norway and other countries has significantly increased in recent years..
