MSC Streamlines Assessment in Pilot Program for Echebastar Indian Ocean Skipjack Tuna

The Marine Stewardship Council has developed a simplified assessment process and is running a pilot program to test the process in the Echebastar Indian Ocean Skipjack Tuna fishery, which failed certification in 2015.
The pilot program “aims to simplify the assessment process – reducing complexity and cost whilst improving effectiveness of stakeholder engagement and maintaining credibility,” according to MSC.
One of the reasons the Echebaster IO tuna fishery was not afforded the MSC logo two years ago was that the regional management group had not adopted a harvest control rule or reference points for the fishery, which in 2015 included skipjack, yellowfin, and bigeye. The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission has since adopted these management tools....
