Alaska's Pollock Trawlers Set to Start Season on January 20 (Fish Radio)

This is Fish Radio. I’m Laine Welch – Alaska’s largest fisheries get underway this month. I’ll tell you more after this –
January first sees the start of Alaska’s biggest fisheries when hundreds of boats set out lines and pots for codfish in all parts of the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea and Aleutian Island regions. Those combined fisheries will produce nearly 670 million pounds of codfish this year.
Hundreds more boats will be on the fishing grounds when pollock and other whitefish open for trawlers on January 20th. Alaska pollock is the nation’s largest fishery with nearly three billion pounds coming out of the Bering Sea and more than 420 million pounds from the Gulf.
