Fresh Mahi Sets 4Q High Price; Frozen Market Nears Record with Latin American Production Delayed

Fresh mahi prices in the US market are trending at an all-time record high level for the fourth quarter. Supplies are more limited than normal since production from major Latin American suppliers started late this year. Both of these factors could also push frozen mahi prices to higher levels into 2017
Mahi prices remain firm because landings are down from Peruvian and Ecuadorian producers. A look at the following chart shows Urner Barry quotations for fresh fish at a historical high for this time of the year. Prices for 10-15 lb fresh whole mahi from Central America are up about 37 percent from last year, roughly a $1.50 per pound higher from 2015 at this time.
Wholesale prices for frozen fillets/portions are up both for limited hangover inventories from last season and for new season production. Traders are reporting premiums because of higher prices paid to fishermen at the beach...
