East Coast Shellfish Harvesters Hit by Duel Threat of Domoic Acid and Norovirus in October

East Coast shellfish harvesters from Maine to Rhode Island are in the midst of an unprecedented wave of closures this fall because of high levels of toxins in the waters.
Maine’s mussel and clam harvests were the first to be impacted according to notices issued at the end of September. Reports from the state’s Department of Natural resources found high levels of Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) in mussel and clam samples collected from eastern shellfish flats in Maine.
By the first week of October, DMR officials confirmed Maine’s shellfish were contaminated from a widespread and abundant bloom of phytoplankton Pseudo-nitzshcia, more commonly known as domoic acid...
