Pew Blasts US for Reneging on Pacific Bluefin Tuna Protection Plan; Reiterates Call for Fishing Ban

Following is a submission from Amanda Nickson the director of The Pew Charitable Trusts’ global tuna conservation efforts. Nickson writes about the insufficient management measures that proposed during the latest meeting of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission in La Jolla, California. According to Nickson, the US backtracked on its initial proposal to levy management protections and set goals to protect and rebuild Pacific bluefin tuna stocks. Nickson reiterates Pew's position to issue a complete ban on bluefin fishing until a management strategy can be determined.
Members of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) meet again in La Jolla, California, this month after failing to reach agreement on management measures for Pacific bluefin tuna in July. As discussions resume, a proposal offered by the United States would do nothing to stem overfishing of this severely depleted species.
