New England Council Says Federal Management Plan Not Needed for River Herring, American Shad

New England Fishery Management Council determined that a federal fishery management plan is not needed for two species of river herrings and two species of shads.
The Council based its decision on a comprehensive review of existing and planned conservation and management efforts for blueback herring and alewifes and American shad and hickory shad. These stocks are currently managed the by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.
Still, the Council did say it will continue to protect the herring and shad stocks by using the tools provided in the recently-approved Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries Management (EAFM) Guidance Document. The Council will also continue to use catch caps to incentivize harvesters to reduce river herring and shad bycatch...
