Herring MIA in Dutch Harbor Food and Bait Fishery

Where's the fish? The Dutch Harbor food and bait herring fishery got off to a rough start when it opened last week in the Unalaska and Akutan districts.
"It is not going very well," said Lisa Fox, management biologist of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. After several days of flying, the spotter pilot hasn't seen any herring, only baby pollock," she said. But "hope and belief" remain that the herring will show up, she said Monday. This year's quota is 2,166 tons. The season opened July 15.
The 2016 Dutch Harbor food and bait herring fishery allocation is 1,863 tons for purse seine gear and 303 tons for gillnet gear...
