Indian Ocean Tuna Commission Adopts Measures to Stop Overfishing of Yellowfin Tuna

“This year’s annual session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) concludes with agreements on some landmark measures for the region’s skipjack and yellowfin tuna stocks that will safeguard the futures of many coastal communities.”
So begins a press release from the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF), a London-based NGO that supports a “one-by-one caught tuna” concept with the aim of strengthening coastal communities, improving sustainability, and providing meals.
Following the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission’s decision to adopt a harvest control rule to ensure the long-term health of the region’s skipjack fishery last week, crucial measures designed to rebuild yellowfin stocks were also taken.
