Maine Economic Development Agency Makes Grants to GMRI and to Start Maine Scallop Aquaculture

The Maine Technology Institute announced funding for several fisheries-related programs in Maine. The publicly funded development agency spent about $8.3 million in 2015, investing in a number of entrepreneurial projects. The MTI is funded by a state bond program approved by the voters.
The awards announced yesterday included $398,306 to the Gulf of Maine Research institute (GMRI) to advance its study of creating a market and supply chain for sustainable seafood in Maine. The grant was matched with an equivalent amount from industry, individual donations and other grants to continue work on its efforts that include branding and certifying responsibly harvested seafood and drawing attention to less popular and “underharvested” species.
