Seafreeze Testimony on the Hill Shows Dangers to Stakeholders of Rush to National Ocean Policy

Seafreeze Ltd. is the largest pelagic fish producer on the East Coast, and yesterday Meghan Lapp, the fisheries liason for the company, testified at a hearing of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Power, and Oceans, titled “The Implications of President Obama’s National Ocean Policy”.
Lapp described her frustrations with getting fisheries issues and stakeholders to be considered in rush to railroad through a national ocean policy. The NOP (National Ocean Policy) is not supposed to supersede the regulatory bodies such as the regional fishery management councils, but in reality that seems to be happening, said Lapp. The regional planners appear ready to dismiss fisheries concerns because they are too complicated.
