Gulf Shareholders Say Red Snapper Reallocation Punishes Commercial Sector Despite Following Limits

The Gulf Reef Shareholders Alliance condemned last week's final federal decision to reallocate Gulf red snapper quotas between the commercial and recreational sectors. The response follows NMFS' decision to finalize a contentious allocation plan to shift the Gulf of Mexico's red snapper quota from the commercial sector to recreational fishermen. Under Amendment 28 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico red snapper quotas were reallocated for the commercial and recreational sectors from 51:49 percent to 48.5:51.5 percent, respectively.
