Rosrybolovstvo Under Fire for Failure to Meet Goals, as Companies Refuse Distant Water Fishing

The Russian government is criticizing the Federal Agency of Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo) in 2015, due to a failure to meet the majority of goals set for the industry last year.
One goal announced with much fanfare was to increase Russian distant water fisheries harvests to more closely match Soviet times. However, the major producers said this was unprofitable without a massive state subsidy.
According to state data, the volume of catch in 2015 was only 58% of the initially planned figures, while in the case of aquaculture these figures were even less than 24%.
The Russian government believes that the industry does not implement its potential in full, while the biggest displeasure of the government is related with the refusal of the majority of producers from fishing in certain areas of the World Ocean, some of which are outside the Russian territorial waters.
In the meantime, according to Alexander Fomin, President of the Russian Association of Fishery Enterprises, Entrepreneurs and Exporters, the latest claims of the state are groundless, while fishing in the majority of areas of the World Ocean outside Russian inland waters is currently unprofitable
