Today's Main Story: Malaysia Asking FDA for Specifics on Shrimp Import Alert  Malaysia wants more details behind the FDA's decision to create an Import Alert that allows it to automatically detain shrimp under the suspicion that its exports contain banned substances. Malaysian authorities say they were not contacted by the FDA prior to it issuing Import Alert 16-136 this week. Malaysia says it is willing to correct any issues in order to comply with US standards. "We will check the report by the US FDA and if we find it to be true, we will take necessary action to make sure exporters comply with the US government rules and standards," said Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, a deputy official with Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture.    The Pacific Fishery Management Council voted earlier this month to allow three West Coast commercial fishing fleets to employ camera-based electronic monitoring systems. Beginning in 2017, commercial fishing vessels can substitute cameras for human observers. This move is designed to simplify logistics, reduce costs and increase profits for fishermen. “This is precedent-setting because it’s the first Council-authorized electronic monitoring system to move from pilot project to full implementation in U.S. waters for purposes of catch accounting,” said Shems Jud, pacific regional director for Environmental Defense Fund’s Oceans Program A study from the University of Washington concluded that the massive "blob" of warm water that sat along the Pacific Northwest Coast for over a year could return in five-year intervals. The study characterized the patch of warm waters as a "marine heat wave" that, like a land-based heat wave, will reoccur given the appropriate environmental conditions.  In other news, The Falkland Islands' sharply lower Illex squid catch might compel the government to reimburse fishermen for the license fees they paid to catch the species.  According to the Director of Natural Resources John Barton, catches in the Falklands' EEZ have plummeted to 2,000 tons compared to 170,000 tons at this time last year. Finally, US restaurant sales in March slowed as customer traffic was down for the month. Sales were dragged down by weak performance at the quick-service level, a sector that has produced especially volatile sales figures in 2016. Have a great weekend.
