Ecuador El Nino Flooding Cutting into Shrimp Production This Month

Flooding in Ecuador has begun to impact shrimp production and harvesting.
Normally Ecuador is at risk of flooding and heavy rain during El Nino years. However, these rains did not come in December or January. However, at the end of January and the beginning of February flooding and heavy rain started in earnest. The Guayaquil river substantially overflowed its banks.
The Ecuador Aquaculture subsector of the Ministry of Agriculture published a map showing the risks to shrimp farming in Ecuador. In Guyaquil a total of 61,392 hectares were susceptible to flooding, out of a total of 82,550 hectares susceptible to flooding in the entire country. These totals include small, medium and large shrimp farming enterprises.
This has disrupted shrimp harvests. ..
