Hokkaido Fish Production Falls to Lowest Level on Record, After Scallops, Squid Disappoint

Fishery production in Hokkaido fell to the lowest level on record in 2015.
Fishery production in Hokkaido in 2015 lost 16% from the previous year to 1,001 thousand tons, registering the lowest level since 1958 when the statistics were first taken, according to the preliminary figures released by the Hokkaido prefecture government.
The poor showing was blamed on sluggish catch of major species such as scallops, squid and saury.
Conversely the overall catch value surged 3% to Y311.2 billion, posting the above-Y300-billion level for the second year in row.
The growth in catch value is attributed to broad-based supply shortage of fish....
