IFFO Urges Increase in By-Products Usage in Feeds like Biomar and Whole Foods, For Low FIFO Ratios

The International Fish Meal and Fish Oil Organization (IFFO) is backing a joint project between multinational feed company BioMar Group and USA-based retailer Whole Foods Market to promote the use of feed for farmed salmon utilising by-products from fish processing.
In late January Norwegian fish farmers Kvarøy and Selsøyvik partnered with importer Blue Circle Foods, feed company and IFFO member BioMar and Whole Foods Market, to create In the Blue, a farmed fish feed that conserves marine resources and reduces environmental contaminants in farmed salmon.
The project has produced a feed that has led to the first farmed salmon with a fish-in, fish-out ratio below 1-to-1, earning it a “Good Alternative” rating from Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program...
