Chinese Buyers Said to be Distorting Market By Injecting Mekong Delta Tiger Shrimp with Water

Most insiders in the seafood industry know that the most valuable commodity they can sell is water. That is why there is a constant battle between those who sell a legitimate natural product and those who soak or inject products to increase their weight.
This issue of soaking or injection has become an increasing problem with China. Now, Vietnamese companies are accusing Chinese traders of bidding up Mekong Black Tiger Shrimp prices by telling local processing plants to increase weight with injection.
Amy Zhong reports that according to Nguyen Van Kich, the general manager for Cafatex Corp, some Chinese buyers of black tiger shrimp are asking their suppliers in Vietnam to increase the weights before shipping.
Those companies that can sell water along with shrimp have an incentive to pay the highest prices.. just as in New Bedford, it is the price of soaked scallops that sets the market...
