Gulf Council Tables Proposal to Move Rec Red Snapper Management to the States

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council tabled a plan to form a state-run management plan for the region's recreational red snapper fishery.
Further discussions for Reef Fish Amendment 39 were postponed during the Council's latest round of meetings held in Alabama between January 25-28. The Amendment included a provision to take federal recreational red snapper management responsibilities away from NMFS in favor of a plan for the five Gulf states to manage the fishery.
However, the Council opted to delay further discussions about the plan in order to explore other options. This is not the same as an outright rejection to the proposal that would essentially stop the effort in its tracks...
