Brazil’s Camanor May Have Found the Next Stage of the Shrimp Aquaculture Revolution

Camanor’s high density, land based facility in Natal, Brazil is being promoted as “a new concept in sustainable shrimp production,” by its Director and founder, Werner Jost. The Global Aquaculture Alliance agrees, awarding it the 2015 Preferred Freezer Services Global Aquaculture Alliance Innovation & Leadership Award.
The key is a new technology called AquaScience® that allows Camanor to create the exact mineral profile that shrimp need to for growth and optimum health. In addition, this technology also reduces the water needed to produce one kilo of shrimp, from over 5000 gallons in traditional shrimp farms to just over 63 gallons, by using the same water during multiple production cycles. The closed system is designed to eliminate the need for antibiotics or chemicals.
Says Jost “The nutrients from the shrimp pond are recycled, with the water going through a denitrification process before being introduced into a tilapia pond. The tilapia, which is more or less a byproduct, is sold into local markets....
