Catalina Sea Ranch Has funding to Start 1st US offshore Aquaculture Platform This Year

Catalina Sea Ranch, founded by Philip Cruver, announced they have raised an additional $1.825 million to increase their total capital to $2.855 million, which is near the $3 million target the company has said is needed to build its first offshore aquaculture platform.
The group has been working since 2012, and has faced a huge permitting obstacle, as NOAA wrote the rules for offshore Aquacuture at the same time they were applying for their permits.
The project, which will grow mussels and eventually oysters on rope culture anchored to the bottom, but stationed 30 feet below the surface, is a pilot project to evaluate the potential of a sustainable shellfish industry for Southern California. The company says its rigorous and transparent monitoring program, employing advanced communication technologies, will provide the scientific data for domestic expansion and for the advancement of global offshore aquaculture.
