Trident Invests in APICDA’s Bering Pacific and Cannon Fish Subsidiaries

APICDA and Trident Seafoods announced today an agreement in principle where Trident will make an investment in APICDA’s subsidiaries Bering Pacific Seafoods and the fuel operation in False Pass, and in Cannon Fish Company, located in Kent, Washington. 

Larry Cotter, CEO for the Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association and Joe Bundrant, CEO of Trident Seafoods, announced the agreement which will give Trident joint ownership in all three of the operations. 

“We are excited to partner with Trident in these operations,” said Larry Cotter. “Trident has a long history of adding value to Alaska’s fishery resources, which has benefited the state’s fishermen and its fishing‐dependent communities. Trident’s investment offers APICDA the opportunity to focus greater resources to develop needed fishing industry infrastructure in our other Community Development Quota (CDQ) communities of Nelson Lagoon, Atka and St. George as we did in False Pass.” 

APICDA has operated  Bering Pacific Seafoods in False Pass since 2009..

Giant Canadian Pension Firm Enters Seafood Industry with Purchase of Largest PEI Mussel Grower

The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan announced the acquisition of Atlantic Aqua Farms, the largest grower of mussels in PEI.  The company was sold by its private investor, Encore Capital.

The purchase of Atlantic Aqua Farms marks Ontario Teachers' first venture into the realm of aquaculture, and falls under its natural resources mandate to invest in the global food basket, with an eye on sustainable sources of food production.

"Demand for protein is increasing, and in the context of land constraints and environmental considerations, aquaculture is among the most sustainable sources to meet this demand," said Andrew Claerhout, Senior Managing Director, Infrastructure and Natural Resources. "Atlantic Aqua Farms has built a significant aquaculture platform, underscoring the significant opportunities for long-term growth in this space."

Russian 2017 Salmon Season Had Major Failures; New Fishing Restrictions Planned

Moscow - According to Rosrybolovstvo, salmon fishing season is on the verge of failure this year in several areas of the Russian Far East.  For example, the volume of catch in the Sakhalin region was only 29,000 tons this year, instead of the usual 250,000 tons. So far, only 200,000 tons of sockeye were produced in the Russian Far East this year.

Russia plans to change the rules for salmon fishing by the end of the current year, due to a significant decline in salmon populations observed during this fishing season in the Far East.  , The deputy head of Rosrybolovstvo Petr Savchuk confirmed this.

Russian scientists believe the main reason of the reduction of salmon stock is global climate change. In addition to Russia, the reductions in salmon are currently observed in other major salmon-producing nations, such as Canada, South Korea and Japan.

The change of the existing rules, according to Savchuk, should help to keep the annual salmon catch at the level of 200,000-250,000 tons per year....

Oregon Delays Dungeness Crab Season Due to Low Meat Recovery

As Dungeness crab from Central California trickles to West Coast markets, Oregon plans to delay the commercial season until Dec. 16 or later. California and Washington may follow suit, as testing has shown crab are low in meat yield.

China’s Fresh Food Ecommerce Changing the Equation for Air Cargo

One of the consequences of the ecommerce boom in China driven by companies such as Alibaba and JD.com is they are driving a new paradigm in air cargo.

According to a recent story in the Journal of Commerce, Ken Allen, CEO of DHL Express, said the expected rise in international e-commerce and intra-Asian trade was behind the $392 million expansion of the integrator’s Central Asia hub at Hong Kong International Airport. More than 40 percent of DHL’s Asia-Pacific express volume travels through Hong Kong.

Greg Guillaume, senior vice president strategic development at Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, agreed that the underlying reason for rising demand was e-commerce, and he labeled it a mega-trend. “Over the longer term, e-commerce will account for an increasing share of retail sales — the mega-trend of our times,” he said.

Moody’s Affirms Red Lobster Debt Rating, but Downgrades Outlook to Negative

Moody’s released an updated rating on Red Lobster’s $380 million of debt securities today.  Moody’s affirmed the debt ratings B3 for corporate debt, which is unchanged.

However, they lowered their long term outlook from stable to negative.

"The change in outlook reflects the company's persistently high leverage and modest interest coverage due in part to continuing weak operating trends." stated Bill Fahy, Moody's Senior Credit Officer. "The affirmation of the B3 CFR considers Moody's expectation that Red Lobster's liquidity will remain strong with the company remaining free cash flow positive and maintaining material unrestricted cash balances" stated Fahy .

Bering Sea Pollock and Cod in Good Shape But Could Be Moving North

The North Pacific Fisheries Management Council's Groundfish Plan Team recommended an allowable biological catch (ABC) for 2018 of Pacific cod in the Eastern Bering Sea of 188,000 mt down from this year’s ABC of 239,000 mt.

The actual catch limits will be determined by the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council in early December. 

Reasons for the downturn in ABC were:

* a 46% drop from 2016 to 2017 in the EBS shelf trawl survey abundance, or numbers of fish -- the biggest drop in history.

* A 37% drop in EBS biomass (weight) from 2016 to 2017 -- also the biggest in history.

There is good news for P-cod elsewhere near the Bering Sea...

France First Country to Put Legal Teeth Behind Claims of Supply Chain Dilligence

Both in the UK and in California there are laws on the books that require companies to report on corporate efforts to remove slavery or trafficking from their supply chains.

However, these reporting laws have little legal consequences behind them if a company fails to uncover slavery or trafficking in its supply chain.

However, a French Law, adopted this year called ‘duty of care’ or Devoir de Vigilance, is believed to be the first law that puts a legal liability on companies with a standard of conduct regarding human trafficking.  Victims of trafficking can seek damages for negligence from these companies in French courts.

“Now, if they make a statement about a policy to address unethical recruitment there is an obligation to actually follow it through,” says Ed Marcum, managing director of Humanity United, a human rights-focused foundation to the Financial Times.

The French law currently only applies to companies with more than 5000 employees, of which there are between 100 and 200 in France.

Study Finds ‘Tipping Point’ That Could Change Oyster Restoration Efforts

Researchers at William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science have made a discovery that could change oyster restoration efforts.

The study, which was published in the November 6 issue of Marine Ecology Progress Series, reveals that reefs that are “rebuilt to reach a foot or more above the bottom can develop into healthy, self-sustaining ecosystems.” Meanwhile, reefs that are lower than a foot are more likely to get coated and buried by sediment.
