Japan Frozen Salmon Market Weakens Ahead of New Season Production in Russia and Alaska

The price in domestic trading in frozen salmon in Japan, which peaked out late in March, has been declining steadily over the past two months.  This is causing Russian sockeye sellers to hold back on price quotes, and also suggests difficulties for Japanese buyers of Alaskan sockeye.

Frozen coho from Chile is still trading around 900 yen per kg. for the 4-6 lb fish, but larger sizes have weakened and are now below 800 Yen per Kg, with some sales reported at 770 Yen or lower.

The sales of fillet products have cooled as well, after a period of record high prices.

The market for U.S. origin sea scallops has fallen considerably since the start of the new year; the result of some demand destruction and expectations for increased landings. Scallops have been trading at-or-close to record levels for four years, climbing almost continuously since the start of 2013. This long-term price action has resulted in a diminished call for scallops. Mexican Film on Tilapia Workers Wins First Prize for World Seafood Congress Women in Seafood Videos

Iceland's Matís, in collaboration with WSI, the International Association for Women in the Seafood Industry, has launched the first worldwide video contest portraying women working in the seafood industry. The videos will be featured at the World Seafood Congress in September.

Two important West Coast groundfish stocks that were formerly listed as overfished have now been rebuilt.

Bocaccio and darkblotched rockfish, which are managed by the Pacific Fishery Management Council, were under strict rebuilding plans that have constrained West Coast fisheries for more than a decade. Bocaccio was declared overfished in 1999, and darkblotched rockfish in 2000; both were rebuilt well before their original target dates.

The Mayor of New Bedford, Jon Mitchel, has appealed to Commerce Secretary Ross to prevent Carlos Rafael’s groundfish permits from leaving New Bedford.

In a letter, (linked here), Mitchel says that "Rafael's business directly employed hundreds of individuals, including 285 fishermen, many of whom would lose their jobs if his groundfish permits were revoked or auctioned off to others outside New Bedford. His business also supports a sprawling supply chain in the port that includes gear menders and manufacturers, fuel companies, vessel outfitters, settlement houses, welders, lumpers, ice houses, truckers, and many others. Some of these businesses rely heavily on Rafael's boats."

As the director of the Oregon Trawl Commission (OTC), the client for the MSC certification of the US West Coast Groundfish Trawl Fishery, I feel that I need to respond to Monday’s article about the MSC and the West Coast groundfish trawl fishery.  First off all, I think that the title is so far removed from reality, that it’s almost laughable.  With that, I’ll address my rebuttal point by point, ending with my thoughts on the article’s title.

The rot at the heart of the MSC system is that they have no concern for maximum sustainable yield, the key driver of fisheries sustainability and economic viability.

  • I don’t know where this rationale comes from. A fishery is scored against the MSC standard, taking into consideration the management system that a fishery operates in.  In their infinite wisdom, the Pacific Council opted for an overfished threshold of 25% B◦, whereas the rest of the US fishery councils have a 20% B◦ ...

Flood of Sick and Weak Shrimp Depresses Market Prices in China during first part of June

China's shrimp prices are declining at the moment, as a flood of weak and sick shrimp hits the market. The general decline has been around 1 to 2 Yuan per Jinn (lb).
